Shaheen Afridi is a typical Pakistani, with a baby face perched atop a two-metre physique. He’s been on the radar of national selectors for over three years as an 18-year-old who’s already at ease in the national team’s green jersey. With an international cricketer for an older brother, he was bound for greatness well before his adolescent years in a more personal group.
When Shaheen was four years old, Riaz Afridi made his one and only Test appearance for Pakistan. Following years of Shaheen’s success in Pakistan’s amateur tape-ball circuit, he pushed him to play hard-ball cricket. After a U-16 talent hunt programme in 2015, he was chosen by FATA.
He made his mark on the country by bowling 8 for 39 in his Quaid-e-Azam Trophy debut, the best-ever statistics by a rookie in the competition. Later, he was selected for the Pakistan Super League, where he took five wickets for four runs in a group game for the Lahore Qalandars, earning him a spot in the T20I team against the West Indies.
When he played the third T20I against the West Indies, he became the first cricketer born after the millennium to represent Pakistan. In the Asia Cup, he was given his ODI debut, replacing Mohammad Amir in the side. He became the 35th player under the age of 19 to make his Test debut for Pakistan in December.
There’s more to him than his narrative, no matter how captivating it is in and of itself. He stands at a commanding 6ft 6in, yet a charming, childlike grin and a carefree demeanour may detract from his intimidating stature. On the docile fields of the UAE, he has the cunning to use his height to extract bounce, while a nasty yorker has proven particularly tough for batsmen to cope with. Most impressively, he can consistently hit a solid length and looks to have the attitude to play at this level for a long time.

Shaheen Afridi Personal Life
- Shaheen is a Pashtun from the Zakhakhel Afridi tribe. He grew raised in Landi Kotal, a town in Pakistan’s Khyber District near the Afghan border. He is the youngest of seven siblings; his eldest brother, Riaz Afridi, is 15 years his older and has only played one Test match for Pakistan.
- Shaheen began his cricket career at Landi Kotal’s Tatara Ground, which is named after the surrounding Tatara hills.
- Shaheen had only played tennis-ball cricket until Riaz Afridi introduced him to hard-ball cricket at the FATA Under-16 trials in 2015.
