Mohammad Hafeez, an opening batsman and excellent offspin bowler, initially represented Pakistan in 2003, but it wasn’t until 2011 that he became a regular in all forms.
As a player, Hafeez provides the club with a variety of options: he bats aggressively at the top of the order, but his well-organized approach allows him to convert to defensive mode if necessary. He doesn’t fly his offbreaks much, but his outstanding line and length control allows him to be used at nearly any point of an innings. He is also one of Pakistan’s finest fielders, particularly in the point zone.
Despite his abilities, Hafeez was unable to establish a permanent position in the Pakistani team throughout his first seven years of international cricket, owing to his failure to convert his starts into big runs. He hit lots of lovely 30s and 40s, interspersed with some magnificent cover-drives, but it only served to reinforce the notion that Hafeez’s potential will always outstrip his performance.
Up 2011, that changed to a great extent, as Hafeez put in consistent performances with both bat and ball in all forms of the game. It began in November 2010 during a series against South Africa, and lasted throughout 2011, a year in which he scored two centuries in Tests and three in ODIs, as well as two fifties in Twenty20 internationals. He was just the third player after Sanath Jayasuriya and Jacques Kallis to score 1000+ runs and take 30+ wickets in ODIs in a calendar year, winning ten Man-of-the-Match honours in international cricket that year.
Since then, Hafeez has continued to perplex and astonish, and the ease with which he switches from one style to the next is a big part of his mystique. By many measures, he’s one of Pakistan’s most productive cricketers, but he’s also probably one of the most wasteful with his great skill.
