Marnus Labuschagne was born in the small South African town of Klerksdorp. He went to Australia with his father when he was ten years old, after his father got a job in the mining industry. He learnt English after starting school in Brisbane and grew up speaking Afrikaans, which was his mothertongue.
He played cricket in school and moved on to the Australian Institute of Sport, where he was picked for the Queensland U-15 team, then the U-17 and U-19 teams, due to his consistent batsmanship in junior cricket.
As a 20-year-old, Labuschagne made his first-class debut at the famous Adelaide Oval in the 2014-15 Shieffield Shield, hitting 83 in his first innings to help his team win. Given that he witnessed Chadd Sayers take a hat-trick from the non-end, striker’s his first performance was one above his years, but he rebuilt the innings with a 99-run fourth-wicket stand with Nick Stevens, laying the foundation for the middle-order to amass 443 runs. Despite the fact that Queensland went on to lose the game and Labuschagne fell for a duck in the second innings, the selectors were impressed with his performance under duress in the first innings, and he has been a part of the side for the subsequent four seasons.
