In the past, Kande Arachchige Isuru Udana Tillakaratna played for Sri Lanka in limited-overs formats.
Ten years after it began, a career that stopped and restarted a few times seems to have settled into a new role. Following some promising domestic performances, Isuru Udana was drafted straight into Sri Lanka’s World T20 squad in 2009. A tour to South Africa in 2008 launched his First Class and List A career for Sri Lanka A. He was then selected for Tamil Union. Wayamaba’s Inter-Provincial Twenty20 title triumph in 2009 was highlighted by Udana’s four-wicket haul and the award for Man of the Match. After the World T20 in England, he was dropped due to poor performances. There were two more comebacks, in 2012 and 2016, but both ended with him being brutally beaten around the park. When it came to T20 leagues, however, he continued to set records. In the 2010 Champions League, while playing for Wayamba, he stumped Matthew Sinclair off a wide ball to get his second hat-trick.
2018 was a better year for Udana, who now has the ability to hit lower-order batsmen as well as being an all-rounder. This year’s Super Provincial One-Day tournament saw him finish as Kandy’s leading wicket-taker, and the Afghanistan Premier League saw him finish as an overall top wicket take.
As Sri Lanka prepared for the 2019 World Cup, Udana’s batting stood out as a standout option among the bowling options available. With Kasun Rajitha (58 runs) in an ODI against South Africa, and then in the T20I series that followed with an 84-run knock from number eight (the highest ever in world cricket from that position), he dominated the opposition.
