Dwayne John Bravo (born 7 October 1983) is a former West Indies cricket team, captain. A genuine all-rounder, Bravo bats right-handed and bowls right-arm medium-fast. He is particularly known for his aggressive batting in the middle order, and for his death bowling. He is also known for his bowling. He also performs as a singer.
Dwayne Bravo is the long-awaited allrounder with much flair and skill as a batsman and seam bowler for the West Indies. Prioritizing IPL over international cricket has resulted in disagreements with the board, and injuries have also curtailed his Test appearances, but as a limited-overs player, Bravo remains an important member for West Indies and took over as ODI captain from Darren Sammy in 2013. He maintained the position until December 2014, when the selectors replaced him with Jason Holder and left him out of the ODI squad, just two months after he played a key role in the team bailing out of a tour to India due to difficulties with the remuneration structure in their updated contracts.
As a player, Bravo’s abilities and self-assurance on the big stage were never in dispute from the start of his international career. In July 2004, he made his Test debut at Lord’s, where he claimed three wickets in the first innings with his medium-paced swings. He also displayed a calm enough demeanor to make a confident start in the crease with the bat. Bravo was clearly a great talent by the end of the series. In four Tests, he scored a lot of runs and took a lot of wickets, but nowhere was his talent more clear than in Manchester, when he led the team in scoring and then restricted England with a six-wicket haul.
In April 2004-05, he made 107 against South Africa in Antigua to get his first century, and in November 2005, he hit 113 against Australia in Hobart. In the ODI series against India in May 2006, he charmed the batters with his slower deliveries while also chipping in with match-winning performances with the bat. In the 2006-07 season, he advanced as a limited-overs player with a fluent unbeaten 112, his maiden ODI tonne, against England in the Champions Trophy, and his best career statistics, 4 for 39, against India in the final game before the World Cup. He was a rare ray of sunshine in the midst of very dark times until an ankle injury sidelined him for eight months in 2008.
Around that time, his value as a Twenty20 player became clear, and with numerous such tournaments on the horizon, most notably the IPL, Bravo chose those commitments over the West Indians’. In 2010, he and Kieron Pollard declined a WICB central contract that would have required him to be available for West Indies at all times. He selected the IPL over a two-Test home series against Pakistan the next year. West Indies played 24 Tests between 2011 and 2013, but Bravo did not appear in any of them. In January 2015, he announced his retirement from Test cricket.
On the other side, he became a staple in the Chennai Super Kings line-up in the IPLs, leading the wickets count with 32 in the 2013 season. He returned to play for West Indies in limited-overs matches, but he had the impression that his talents were being underutilized.
