Madagamagamage Dasun Shanaka (born September 9, 1991) is a Sri Lankan cricketer who plays in all formats and is the current limited overs captain of the Sri Lankan Cricket Team. Shanaka, who is known as a pinch hitter, is a batting all-rounder with a useful right-arm medium fast bowling arm.
Dasun Shanaka is another product of the rich Sinhalese Sports Club. A hard-hitting all-rounder who juggles between being a lower-order impetus and an useful medium pacer who can swing the ball, Dasun Shanaka is yet another product of the fertile Sinhalese Sports Club. After a few years of consistent achievements in the shorter formats, two whirlwind hundreds in club cricket in 2015 were his first big claim to fame.
Despite making his T20I debut against Pakistan before that, these knocks catapulted him into the spotlight, which he seized with a three-fer against India on a green Pune surface in 2016. On the tour to England, he made his Test debut soon after, but it was his ODI debut against Ireland that stood out, as he became only the third Sri Lankan to pick a fifer on debut. He was also given the title of Man of the Series.
However, because to inconsistency in his hitting and limited opportunities at that position, he was unable to secure a spot in either format and was in and out for the following three years.
Things worsened in 2017. The match referee found him guilty of ball tampering during a Test match against India in Nagpur, and penalised him 75% of his match money.
The next year, he made a strong recovery, blasting a 34-ball 65 against South Africa in an ODI, which included four fours and five sixes. When most of the senior players withdrew out due to security concerns, he was selected as the captain of the T20I leg of the tour to Pakistan. On that tour, he made history by defeating the then-number one team 3-0 in their own backyard with a weaker squad.
