After spent the most of his career in and around the Australia squad without truly winning a regular spot, Dan Christian has become a worldwide T20 gun-for-hire. Christian began his career in New South Wales, moved to South Australia, and then to Victoria before of the 2013-14 season. He batted in the top six and provided a vital additional seam option. He was summoned into Australia’s ODI and T20 teams during that summer, and he was included to the squad for the 2014 World T20 in Bangladesh. He made his T20 international debut four years ago and has since been a T20 competition regular winner. He has competed in tournaments all around the world for 16 different franchises, reaching 11 finals and won seven trophies. In the 2018-19 BBL final, he was named Player of the Match for the Melbourne Renegades.
Christian, at his best, is a complete package of clean hitting with the bat, wicket-taking ability with the ball, and precise fielding. During Australia’s home series against India in 2011-12, he was invited into the Test team but was not granted a baggy green. He was South Australia’s leading run scorer and second best wicket-taker in the Ryobi Cup the previous summer, and he also served as the state’s captain. His second move, to Victoria, occurred after a suspension by South Australia following three tantrums in which he destroyed change rooms following his dismissals in the 2012-13 season.
Christian is also famous for being one of the few Aboriginal players to reach the top levels of the game. Christian comes from the Wiradjuri tribe in New South Wales, where he graduated from Cricket Australia’s indigenous cricket programme and captained the national indigenous development side on a tour of England in 2009. He also led Australia’s Aboriginal XI on a trip of England in 2018 to mark the 150th anniversary of the first indigenous Australian team to visit the United Kingdom.
