Babar Azam, a right-handed top-order batsman known for his discipline and calm demeanour, cemented his place in Pakistan’s batting line-up with a strong performance in 2016, scoring three consecutive ODI hundreds against the West Indies in the UAE and a 90 in his third Test against the West Indies in Hamilton. At the moment, he was 22 years old.
Azam, who was born in Lahore and is a first cousin of the Akmal brothers, rose through the ranks of age-group cricket. He began his career in an under-15 global championship in 2008, and he went on to participate in two under-19 World Cups in 2010 and 2012, when he was Pakistan’s leading run-scorer.
“We didn’t have to lead him; he was on his own,” Kamran Akmal explained, “but we were always supportive.” Before being called up to the national side in 2015, Azam had the distinction of consistently being the top scorer in age-group domestic cricket. He made his debut during the home ODI series against Zimbabwe, which was unusual because Azam’s rise occurred during Pakistan’s isolation as an international venue due to security concerns.
Following his hat-trick of ODI hundreds against the West Indies, Azam was given the opportunity to secure his place in the Test team as Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-careers Haq’s came to an end.
He’d seize the chance with both hands. Azam went on to become Pakistan’s top batsman, the country’s most recognised cricketer, and one of the finest batters in the world in the years that followed. Even though he still has a long way to go in his career, he is one of Pakistan’s finest ever batters.
He was the second-fastest player in the world to reach 2000 ODI runs and 1000 T20I runs. He already has more ODI hundreds than all but two Pakistan batsmen, and his World Cup century against New Zealand in a crucial game will go down as one of Pakistan’s greatest individual ODI performances.
