Adam Zampa, a legspinner with Shane Warne’s run-up and movement, made his ODI and T20 debuts for Australia in 2016 following a good summer for South Australia and the Melbourne Stars. He’s been a difficult player to get away from in T20, with subtle changes of pace and variations like a wrong’un and straight ball compensating for a lack of enormous turn.
No Australian bowler got more wickets in the 2016 World T20 in India than Zampa, who had five at a strike rate of 13.80 and an economy rate of 6.27. In the IPL that followed, he took 6 for 19 for the Rising Pune Supergiants, which was the second-best performance in the tournament’s history.
After two years of being in and out of Australia’s ODI and T20I teams, he eventually established himself as a regular in 2019, playing every game on the victorious tours of India and the UAE and securing his spot in the World Cup squad that year.
His white-ball success has limited his first-class prospects. Zampa’s father, Darren, was a member of the New South Wales Country team, and Zampa began his career there as well, making his debut in 2012-13 before transferring to South Australia the following year. For the 2020-2021 season, he will return to Sydney in the hopes of gaining more first-class experience.
