Last year, former India captain and World Cup winner MS Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket on this day.
Dhoni has 350 ODI appearances under his belt, with the best score of 183 against Sri Lanka. He is also the
only skipper to have won all of the major ICC awards (50-over World Cup, T20 World Cup and
Champions Trophy).
Dhoni, often nicknamed ‘Captain Cool’ is noted for his cool demeanor and superb captaincy on the
field. He established himself as one of the best wicket-keepers in the world over the years. His dexterity
behind the stumps helped India win a number of vital wickets.

Dhoni is also recognized for his ability to effectively opt for video referrals, and many have joked that
the DSR should be renamed the ‘Dhoni Review System.’
He declared his retirement from Test cricket in December 2014, giving Wriddhiman Saha a chance.
Dhoni retired from Test cricket after 90 appearances and a total of 4,876 runs at an average of 38.09.
In the 50-over format, he then handed over the captaincy to Virat Kohli in 2017. India also rose to the
top of the Test cricket rankings under Dhoni’s leadership.
Under Dhoni’s leadership, Chennai Super Kings have won the lucrative Indian Premier League three
times.
Suresh Raina, Dhoni’s teammate, and 2011 World Cup winner followed in Dhoni’s footsteps and retired
from international cricket on the same day last year.
Dhoni took retirement on the day of Independence day. He posted a video on Instagram with the song
“main pal do pal ka sayar hoon”. The video featured all of his moments from cricket.
