In 2018-19, Jhye Richardson joined Australia’s much-heralded fast bowling “big three” of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc. He delivers a distinct trajectory in all three disciplines as a tiny man with a whippy, quick arm movement and the ability to swing the ball at speeds of 140kph. His promising start was cut short when he dislocated his shoulder in an ODI against Pakistan in the UAE, ruling him out of contention for the World Cup and the Ashes, and necessitating further surgery after the 2019-2020 season.
Richardson was a surprising selection in Australia’s T20I squad to face Sri Lanka in February 2017 after making his one-day debut for Western Australia at the age of 19 in 2015-16 and his Sheffield Shield debut later that season. His call-up followed a successful BBL season in which he took 11 wickets and was named Player of the Match in the final, when he ripped through the Sydney Sixers middle-order to help Perth Scorchers win the tournament. He had only played one first-class game at the time of his national selection.
From then, he made fast development. Following a strong end to the 2017-18 season, in which he made his ODI debut against England, he was selected for the notorious Test tour of South Africa, and injuries to the top three cleared the way for a national contract and limited-overs tours of England and Zimbabwe.
Following some harrowing experiences at the hands of England’s batters, he returned to Australia and dominated the Sheffield Shield to reclaim his Australian jersey. He grabbed Virat Kohli’s wicket three times in three One-Day Internationals against India before making his Test debut against Sri Lanka in February 2019 at the Gabba, where he claimed five wickets.
